One woman failed to comprehend the meaning of a child-free wedding and brought her young baby without permission, sparking some serious wedding "drama" which the mother later claimed she had no intention of causing.
Breaking Wedding Rules
Young children often struggle to grasp the concept of being quiet during social events like weddings, as they just want to play, laugh, scream, and make a mess. That's why child-free weddings exist – they offer a tranquil and romantic environment for everyone to enjoy the special day without any disruptions.
For one mom, however, the thought of leaving her young child with a babysitter was extremely uncomfortable that she decided to simply bring her baby to a child-free wedding.
No Children Allowed
In a Reddit post, a new mom shares that her cousin lives six hours away from her and the rest of the family, but they still drove over to attend his wedding a few months ago.
However, due to limited space, only the bride's young nieces and nephews were invited to the wedding, and no other children were allowed.
Ditching The Babysitter
The mom had a ten-month-old baby at the time and was uncomfortable leaving him with a stranger in an unfamiliar place. Her other cousins had hired a babysitter for their kids, but she wasn't comfortable with the idea.
“So I decided to bring him to the wedding,” the mom shares in her post.
Early Notice
But to avoid surprising everyone on the wedding day, she wrote on the RSVP that she would bring her ten-month-old baby and that he would sit on her lap during the wedding. She also mentioned that she would bring her own food for him.
Crying Baby at the Ceremony
Since her cousin didn't respond, the mother assumed it was okay to bring her ten-month-old baby to the wedding.
However, the mom's plan did not go smoothly as the baby cried during the ceremony, and she had to take him out of the room quickly.
The Baby "Didn't Make Much Of A Fuss"
At the reception, the mother kept her baby with her in a body carrier the entire time, and he didn't make much of a fuss, which made her believe that everything was okay. Little did she know that not everyone at the reception was “OK” with it.
Aunt Controfnts The Mother
The mom faced an uncomfortable situation after the wedding when her aunt, who was also the groom's mother, confronted her and accused her of being “rude” for bringing her baby without permission.
Justifying Her Decision
In response, she explained to her aunt that she clarified on the RSVP that she was bringing her baby and would keep him on her lap and bring her own food, and her cousin didn't object.
No Exceptions
The aunt pointed out that her other cousin left their 7-month-old baby with a certified babysitter, and that she should’ve respected the wedding rules and done the same with her baby.
Uncomfortable Bride & Groom
According to the aunt, the mom's cousin and his bride did have a problem with her bringing the baby, but the bride didn't want to cause any “drama” since she didn't know the mother well.
Upset Cousins
The situation wasn’t only uncomfortable for the bride and groom, but it also upset some of the mother's cousins who believed that the groom gave her special treatment by allowing her to bring her baby while making them leave their kids with a babysitter
To Bring or Not to Bring? Mom Seeks Answers
“I didn't mean to start any drama,” the mother asserts.
Unsure whether she was in the wrong for bringing her baby to a child-free wedding, the mother turned to the Reddit community for their judgment on the matter.
“Staying Home Is Always An Option”
“YTA,” voted one Redditor. “Your baby literally did the thing that the bride/groom wanted to avoid - disrupt the ceremony. You had plenty of time to find a babysitter or other family member to watch your kid while you went to the wedding but decided that you were just above the rules.”
Another user chimed in, suggesting that if the mother wasn't comfortable leaving her baby with a sitter, then she could have just chosen not to attend the wedding. “Staying home is always an option,” they wrote.
“You Disrupted The Ceremony”
“You can't just write in a plus one, especially a child at a child-free wedding,” one user expressed. “Your child was disruptive for a bit before you took them out, which is exactly what the couple didn't want.”
“You disrespected the bride and groom, violated their wishes, and disrupted the ceremony. This was extremely not okay of you. If you can't find a suitable childcare arrangement, stay home.”
“What Is Wrong With You?”
“YTA absolutely and without question,” commented one Redditor. “Child-free means child-free, if you don’t want to leave your baby with a babysitter then you stay home. You were incredibly rude.”
“The reason a lot of people want child-free weddings is so they don’t have their vows interrupted or ruined by screaming kids. Yours did exactly that. The world doesn’t revolve around you and your choices. You don’t get to write “I’m bringing my kid” on a child-free invite.”
Baby Crying at Wedding 24 Years Ago Still Upsets Bride
Another Reddit user shared a similar experience where they had declared their wedding to be child-free and even had friends stationed at the entrance to direct anyone who brought children to free babysitters. Despite their efforts, someone still brought a baby and sat in the back, claiming that the baby “would be fine.”
“You can hear this damn baby crying on my video and it p.sses me off 24 years later every time I think about it,” they shared.
