The former GOP speaker Newt Gingrich wanted to praise the former president, but instead, he made a priceless remark that was anything but flattering.
The former GOP speaker tried praising Trump
Talking to Fox News's Laura Ingraham, Gingrich said, “One of Trump’s great advantages is he talks at a level where third, fourth, and fifth-grade educations can say, ‘Oh yeah, I get that. I understand it.’”
The remark did not go unnoticed
People across social media could not stop sharing the clip and adding their captions. One of the most retweeted replies said simply, "He’s not wrong."
A reminder
A Twitter user wrote, "A good reminder that Newt Gingrich is a stupid person's idea of a smart person."
Bringing down the GOP house
Another said, "The fact that he speaks to the children says everything you need to know about the educational level the Right is shooting for."
One used math
A Twitter poster wrote, "He appeals to the lowest common denominator," and added a hashtag, math.
No lies detected
Someone stated, "Trump is on a third-grade level, so this isn’t an act." It was followed by, "I mean, he has a point."
Suspicions rose
One person asked, "Is that supposed to be a compliment?" Another added, "Makes sense why the GOP is banning books."
Someone elaborated
This person explained how things work, "As strange & self-defeating as it sounds, speaking simply reaches the masses far easier than being oratorial. Obama was an exception because he heralded a movement of historical significance. But generally, speaking simply helps. But I'm definitely also enjoying the passive snide."
More attacks on GOP
One wrote, "The Republican Party is a party of clowns." But another disagreed, "It's a cult. The very definition of cultism. Not hyperbole."
Some were weirded out
Someone said, "It speaks volumes about America and how low we have sunk." This person wondered, "Why can't they leave America alone? Hasn't he caused enough trouble?"
Nothing but the truth
A Twitter poster alleged, "This is the most truthful thing about Trump ever said." Another chimed in, "Talk about a backhanded compliment of the MAGA base."
It was all sad
One said, "That’s right — adults with a grade school education. What could go wrong…" This person pleaded, "Stop and think for a minute how sad this commentary is."
Projection
Someone added, "Projection….they want everyone in the country to have the education of a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader." And this one wrote, "And Trump voters have no idea that Newt just insulted them."
Something to think about
This Twitter user shared, "What Newt is saying here is that this is REALLY what he and Trump and Fox News believe about Trump supporters. They play those voters/viewers like fiddles, and the voters/viewers come through for them every time."
Rich white people
Another added, "Rich white people attain and preserve power by relying on poor white people to keep them in power. The rich folks pay them back by keeping them poor but give them a cute brand just for them, MAGA—a self-contained echo chamber."
