Katelyn Sullivan shared a disturbing video explaining she is broke but was ordered to pay 60 dollars to cover the cost of the lost revenue on the table.
The server, who shared a video on TikTok, explained that a table simply walked out, and she was ordered to pay the bill.
The comment section exploded with numerous people telling Sullivan that she does not have to cover the costs and that it's illegal.
Social media users shared their thoughts
Many commentators said this was an "illegal" move and she should report and even sue the establishment.
Katelyn's video with an overlay text saying, "When the table doesn't pay, and the manager says you have to pay their $60 check and you don't have $60," caused many to comment they would "be quitting that day or sue or both."
A restaurant manager named Gabi wrote that this was "100% illegal."
A user named Kitty cat wrote, "they legally can not make you pay that. My old manager tried that with me once, but I didn't let it happen."
Someone said: "You better not pay that". Others even wanted the original poster to call the police.
Despite these claims, many commentators were in a similar position as Katelyn.

Servers are paying other people's costs
One comment summed up the reality rather well:
"Me reading all the comments this is illegal when this happens to me all the time."
Two women also shared their experiences. Diana said, "I had to either pay or take a write-up," while a social media user named Sydney replied to the video, writing, "These 2 girls dined and dashed, and I had to pay as well."

What does the law say?
The law is unclear despite many comments saying that Sullivan should and can refuse to pay and sue. First, it defers from one state to another.
U.S. Department of Labor only states that it is not allowed for those who make under the minimum wage hourly rate to pay. The rest is in a grey area.
This rule regarding below-minimum-wage workers applies in other areas, such as when it comes to their uniforms or anything similar.
As stated, it is all about the state or even the city you work in. In New Jersey, for example, the employee cannot make deductions from the server's paycheck.
This only means that comments on the video, which has around 100k likes, are partly true. Many wondered if the original poster would make a follow-up video, clarifying what the state regulations have to say about her situation.
