Judging by the recent headlines, more and more women opt to paint their nails during flights, and the smell of the nail polish, as well as the acetone, is driving other people crazy.

A Daily Mail reported that a flight from Miami to Barbados was forced to return soon after flyers became sick due to an "acetone smell." The nail polish remover likely spilled in a passenger's carry-on, and "some passengers reportedly became sick and started vomiting due to the strong smell.”

A person complained that someone painted their nails on a 3-hour plane journey. This Reddit section got over 600 comments and 4k upvotes before it was deleted.

People shared how to deal with in-air manicure artists

The most upvoted comment in the viral Reddit thread said, "Happened on a flight I was on; flight attendant came over and shut that down within a minute for degrading the air quality."

But not all FA are as helpful

In a reply, a person shared, "The flight attendant asked her after 4 of us asked her to stop, and she didn't because, by the time the FA got involved, she was doing the top coat."

Rude and entitled

Another Reddit poster wrote, "People like this make me realize how overly considerate I am. My brain can't comprehend this level of entitlement and selfishness."

Another person wrote, "I love doing my nails, but I would never do them in such an enclosed space where people can't escape the fumes." They added it was "rude," and in a reply, someone joked, "Bro, just open the window. It's that easy."

This is not only annoying but dangerous too

Someone warned, "This can actually be dangerous - my former head of department had an allergy to formaldehyde fumes, which a lot of drugstore brands of nail polish contain. She needed an EpiPen for it, and had to be removed to open air whenever she caught so much as a whiff of it. How could she do that if some idiot filled a plane with the fumes??"

Toxic chemical

Another Reddit poster explained, "Formaldehyde is straight-up toxic to everyone. If people who wanna paint their nails subject their selves to a toxic chemical, so be it, but the second they subject other people to a toxic chemical, they should be made pay recompense to the victims."

Headache is a common side effect

The chemicals in nail polishes and nail polish removers can cause headaches, a mild symptom compared to a full-on allergic reaction. This person shared, "I detest the smell of acetone and other chemicals used for the process of fingernail decoration. Headache within seconds."

Despite what many claims, nail-related items are not illegal

Regarding nail polish remover, the Federal Aviation Administration says, "Not all carry-on items may be used during flight. Consult the flight crew before using items that give off strong odors or vapors, such as nail polish and remover.”

Companies do not have specific rules

Aero companies do not have rules, and most rely on common sense. It is best to notify the flight attendant or, if that does not work, take advice from this Reddit user who said, "Casually walk by and bump her chair 'accidentally' multiple times."
