Certainly, neighbors can sometimes engage in behaviors that are annoying and inconsiderate, such as throwing late-night loud parties and other inconsiderate and annoying behaviors. Yet, there are instances where some behaviors become unbearable.
Take, for instance, the story of a woman who reached her breaking point when her neighbor took a package from her porch, leading her to immediately call the cops on him.
Neighbors at Odds
In a Reddit post, a 38-year-old woman reveals that she lives alone in the very house she grew up in, left to her by her mother ten years ago following her passing.
Around four years back, a couple of similar age moved in next door, and right from the start, they have been engaged in a series of disputes and conflicts.
Three Cats vs One Dog
The OP mentions that she has three cats, which she sometimes lets out into her backyard. Unfortunately, her neighbors have a dog that jumps the 5-foot chain link fence separating their yards to chase after them.
Boundary Battle
Frustrated with the situation, the woman confronted her neighbors, warning them that if she caught their dog jumping the fence again, she would not hesitate to call the cops.
“They Had the Audacity”
It seems like the woman was taken aback by her neighbor's response.
“They actually had the audacity to ask if I would be willing to split the cost of a taller privacy fence instead of, you know, training your dog not to jump the fence,” she shares in her post.
It “Technically” Belonged To Them
Refusing to take responsibility for the issue, the woman explained that she wasn’t the one causing the problem, and besides, the fence technically belonged to her neighbors.
As a resolution, they ultimately decided to install a taller fence.
Unexpected Expenses
Afterward, the neighbors approached the woman and requested that she share the expenses of removing an Ash tree located on their property. The tree had been infested with a destructive bug, resulting in its death, and the presence of dead limbs posed a hazard to their driveway.
Surveyor's Verdict
Upon the neighbors' request, they arranged for a survey by the city, and the surveyor determined that the tree was actually about 10% on the woman's property.
However, the woman firmly insisted that the tree belonged to the neighbors, and if they wanted to remove it, they would be required to cover the costs since she had no issue with it.
Late-Night Parties
"Needless to say, we're not friends," she boldly declares.
In addition to their ongoing disputes, the woman claims that her neighbors have also hosted loud, late-night parties that involved bonfires and blaring music, causing her to call the cops multiple times.
Caring for Cats
The woman also mentions that she is currently out of town and visiting her family for a couple of weeks. Fortunately, she has a friend who kindly comes over to her house every day to look after her cats, collect any mail or packages, and ensure that her cats receive their regular medication deliveries.
Doorbell Surprises
The other day, the woman received a notification about the delivery of some packages and she texted her friend about it. However, before her friend could arrive, she received another notification from her Ring doorbell.
Neighbor Wants His Package
“I pulled up the live feed and saw my neighbor on my patio,” she recounts.
When she approached him and asked about it, her neighbor explained that a package of his had mistakenly been delivered to her house, so he was simply retrieving it.
Not So Fast
In response, she firmly told him to leave because her friend would bring his package when she arrived, but he still refused. “He said he's not waiting for that and tried to leave.”
Tensions Peak
The woman insisted that he take a package from my porch, warning that she would call the cops if he didn’t.
“He shoved the package in front of the camera and said ‘That's my name and address, OP. I'm taking my package.’ Then he walked away.”
Reported Theft
Following the incident, the woman wasted no time and called the police. She reported that he had stolen a package from her, and provided them with the video evidence to support her claim.
The police then assured her that they would conduct an investigation into the matter.
Police Arrives
When her friend arrived a little later, she found the police talking to her neighbors. It seemed that the police had left during the time she was checking on her cats, as when she went outside, only her neighbors were there.
Furious Neighbor
The neighbors were filled with anger when they found out that she had called the police, with the husband yelling at her to tell her that she’s “a huge a..hole.”
He also told demanded that she “take the police off speed-dial and let them deal with more important sh.t” and stop using them as her own “personal problem-solving service.”
Did She Overreact?
Filled with doubt, the woman found herself questioning whether she was in the wrong for involving the police when her neighbors simply wanted to retrieve their own package. Seeking guidance and validation, she turned to the Reddit community, posing the age-old question: "AITA?"
The responses she received, true to Reddit's nature, ranged from blunt criticism to clever, intertwined with some genuinely helpful advice.
Reddit's Verdict
“YTA,” voted one Redditor. “I get the fence thing. You could have pitched in on the tree just to chill things out. Calling the police about the parties without talking to them about it first is very a..hole.”
“If it was his package and it had their name and address on it calling the cops on them was also an a..hole move. You're officially an a..hole neighbor now.”
“Petty”
“YTA - sure,” another agreed. “You don't get along. But stop calling the cops for trivial matters!”
They questioned, “Do you actually think that they were stealing a package or were you just trying to continue this grudge and be petty?”
“Awful Neighbours”
“They sound like absolutely awful neighbors, and under any other circumstances, I'd side with you in a second. But you called the cops and accused them of stealing THEIR OWN PACKAGE,” a “YTA” voter pointed out.
“They didn't steal from you. They fetched something that belonged to them off your porch. And it doesn't sound like you cared to listen to anything they had to explain.”
