Many people spend their workdays dreaming of the moment they can finally clock out and do something more fun – like grabbing a drink, hanging with friends, or just chilling at home with their phone.
Block him, of course
While most employees are busy enjoying their time off work, one woman found herself constantly getting text messages from her boss on her personal phone.
Her solution? Block him, of course.
Sick at home
It's bad enough when your boss texts you outside of work hours, but this woman's boss took it to the extreme. He was texting her for work-related tasks even when she was home sick from work.
Vanessa's life hack
TikTok user Vanessa (@wealthxlab) recently made a video about her boss who kept texting her outside of work hours, sharing her own “life hack” for dealing with this annoying situation.
“I just blocked my boss so he couldn't contact me while I wasn't at work”
Boss kept interrupting her
Sick days are supposed to be for rest and recovery, but Vanessa’s boss didn't seem to understand that. Instead, he kept texting her about work and interrupting her much-needed rest.
“I'm at home sick from work today,” she explains, “And for some reason he felt the need to text me about work tasks for some contacts.”
Separate work phone
Vanessa also notes that she pays $45 a month for a separate work phone, just so she doesn't have to deal with work-related texts outside of her working hours.
“He knows not to text my personal number, but he still does sometimes,” she continues.
Need to take action
When her boss kept sending her work tasks while she was home sick, Vanessa knew she had to take action. So, she did what any reasonable person would do: she simply blocked him.
People share their opinions on someone blocking their own boss
Vanessa’s decision to block her boss was met with support from some commenters, who placed the blame on her boss.
“I don’t blame you, he’s not your friend and you’re not working,” One person wrote, while another stressed the importance of keeping boundaries with her boss, “Good for you, important to maintain these boundaries.”
Boundaries
A different commenter chimed in with their own similar story, writing “Girl, all of mine blocked because they don’t respect anyone’s boundaries. Love to see it!”
Some even mentioned that what Vanessa's boss did is legally penalized in places like Ontario, Canada, noting that "it's actually illegal to contact employees outside work hours."
Good advice
Others were surprised to learn that Vanessa pays for a separate phone number, with one commenter suggesting, “Your company should pay for that phone.”
Bold move
Regardless of your stance on Vanessa’s bold move, it's generally agreed that this takes a lot of courage to block your own boss, no matter how annoying they were.
Not committed?
It also raises some questions about how committed she is to her job and whether she's willing to take risks to establish boundaries – she could be fearless or ready to quit.
Would you block your boss?
