Piers Morgan is in hot water for recently sharing his unsolicited opinions on the new hit movie Barbie which he’s clearly not a fan of. In fact, he claimed that if he ever made a movie for men like that, he'd be "executed."
Piers Morgan’s Take on Barbie
The ex-host of Good Morning Britain, now the face of Piers Morgan Uncensored, made his stance on the movie clear in an op-ed for the New York Post. Morgan really didn't hold back, harshly criticizing the Greta Gerwig hit for promoting "feminazis."
Unfiltered Critique
In his column from July 24th, Morgan wrote, “If I made a movie mocking women as useless dunderheads, constantly attacking ‘the matriarchy,’ and depicting all things feminist as toxic bulls***, I wouldn’t just be canceled, I’d be executed.”
Barbie Isn’t About Gender Equality
The British TV host continued: “Head Barbie rides to the rescue by seizing back control and driving the hapless Kens back to being subservient saps to the women again. To which my response is: Why? I thought the whole point of feminism is that women wanted equality with men, not a complete reversal of the perceived unequal social power structure.
Unrealistic Utopia
“I don’t know any woman, other than perhaps US female soccer superstar Megan Rapinoe, who wants a world where women dominate absolutely everything – and men are reduced to dim-witted doormats barely capable of changing a light bulb,” he added.
Piers Morgan Slammed Online
While the TV host was trying to satisfy a large section of his fanbase who were furious about the film, he still received backlash from Twitter users for sharing his opinion. Twitter user @ianmakesfilms commented, “I mean the film literally could not be any more subtle with the message of 'maybe both sexes should treat each other better.'"
A second wrote, “It’s not really that subtle. It’s pretty obvious that the movie is trying to push equality rather than superiority.”
Real-Life Women's Struggles
The criticism on Twitter continued to pour in on Morgan, with one user expressing, “Lol. Pierce [sic] got so triggered by a 2hr long movie that he forgot the sense of reality, forgot all about the historical REAL-LIFE abuse of women.” another Twitter user argued, “That would be true if Ken was a man!”
‘Humiliating’ and ‘Pathetic’
Someone else wrote on Twitter: “On train was a copy of The S*n so I looked at front page to see what nonsense fools who buy it being fed. Piers Morgan on why Barbie film is feminist woke awful etc -what a humiliating pathetic way for a grown man to earn a living. Handy reminder tho -off to see it in 20 mins.”
A Feminist Masterpiece or Outdated Stereotype?
Director Greta Gerwig, known for her female-centric movies like Lady Bird and Little Women, confidently labeled Barbie as "most certainly a feminist film." Still, the feminist touch in Barbie's character certainly offended some like Morgan, portraying what they view as an outdated stereotype for women: A "blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world."
Twitter user @MationMiss expressed, “You mean the movie that treats men the same way women are treated in society? While also asking them to be themselves and happy with who they are?”
Conservative Backlash Against Barbie
Following a familiar train of thought, Morgan's comments align with the approach taken by many conservatives ever since Barbie premiered on July 21. Several politicians, like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), have attempted to stir controversy around the film, with Cruz even declaring he was "going to war" against it.
Male Fragility Exposed
On the other hand, Morgan and Cruz's political posturing, according to many, directly highlights the issue of male fragility, which happens to be one of the central themes of the movie. "Always the hypothetical persecution of men is taken more seriously than the actual persecution of women,” wrote one Twitter user.
Speaking Numbers
According to CNN, Barbie had a remarkable weekend, excelling on both the domestic and international fronts. The domestic box office garnered an impressive $93 million, while the international release brought in approximately $122 million, securing its position as the No. 1 release worldwide. Notably, it achieved the largest second weekend performance for Warner Bros. in the domestic market, solidifying its place as a major success for the studio.
Feminist Fantasia
With its record-breaking box-office performance, the Barbie movie has not only brought back the charm of dress-up but has also drawn considerable attention to feminism. Most of the scenes in the movie unfold in Barbieland, a vibrant and female-dominated utopia with candy-colored surroundings, where Barbies are in charge of everything and dominate almost all jobs, except for "beach."
The ‘Real World’ vs Barbieland's Paradise
Kens are more like secondary characters in the movie, which starkly contrasts with the "real world." The Barbieland is basically a paradise for women where men take a backseat and wait for Barbies to notice them. The president in the land is a Black woman, the very respected doctor is a trans woman, and the Barbies embrace plus-sized and disabled women, all coexisting harmoniously.
