What was meant to be a wonderful vacation turned into an unexpected session of "manual labor" for one woman, who had to endure standing in 90-degree weather and then walking up 160 stairs with all her luggage, just to reach the top of a “gorgeous” destination in Italy.
American Traveler Lost in Italy
Traveling is undoubtedly an experience filled with surprises, and not all of them are necessarily pleasant. For example, It's not uncommon for anyone (regardless of their usual sense of direction) to find themselves lost at some point during their travels. Similarly, incidents like running out of money, losing belongings like a phone, grappling with language barriers, or missing a flight are all part of the many experiences one may encounter while exploring new places.
Unexpected Surprise
For one American tourist, the unexpected surprise she encountered while exploring a part of Italy was that there are no streets, no cars, and no adequate tourist infrastructure. This left her with no choice but to reach her destination on foot, carrying all her luggage in scorching 90-degree weather.
From Dream Destination to Disappointment
In a now-viral TikTok video that has garnered 879,700 views since its posting, Lexi Jordan (@millenniallex) voices her frustration over her recent trip to Italy, declaring, “Every single influencer and TikToker who put the Amalfi Coast on my for you page over the last 2 months deserves jail time.”
What Influencers Don’t Tell You
Lexi points out an important aspect of traveling to the Amalfi Coast that often remains hidden on social media, leaving her with the impression that it was more like manual labor than a vacation. She explains, “Because while they showed you the gorgeous coastlines and the cute little towns, what they didn't tell you were the disclaimers.”
Enduring the ‘Impossible’
The main problem with her is the seemingly "impossible" task of getting there. First, one has to fly into Naples, then take a train from Naples to Sorrento, and endure standing in 90-degree weather, waiting for a ferry. She had to carry all her luggage onto the ferry after spending two weeks in Europe, just to finally arrive at the coastal area.
Jaw-Dropping Realization
After enduring all the struggles to get her luggage onto the ferry, Lexi is faced with yet another shock about the destination that definitely doesn’t evoke a vacation vibe: To reach the most elevated points with the stunning hotels and breathtaking views, she realizes that there are no streets and no cars there, at all.
‘Manual Labor’
The TikToker continues, “So you have to walk up 160 stairs, with all of your luggage, to get to the top of this gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous area with these beautiful views. Carry it, and then also, all the power went out because the Amalfi Coast doesn't have the infrastructure to support this tourism. Oh my god!”
Learning from Experience
Despite Lexi's claim that she loves the place, her primary takeaway from the experience is a valuable piece of advice for future visitors: if someone plans to go there, they should avoid making the same mistake she did by opting for at least a week rather than just two days.
‘This girl is kinda dumb’
Lexi's complaints about walking in Italy elicited diverse responses in the comment section, with not everyone sympathizing with her vacation experience. One viewer placed the entire blame on the American tourist, remarking, “Do people not do research before they travel anymore??”
Another shared, “I have traveled a lot in my years and I always do extensive research when I travel so I always know what I’m getting myself into. Please do the same!”
Private Car as a Solution
Among the commenters, there were several individuals who offered future advice to Lexi based on their own experiences of taking a private car. One user shared,” Most influencers I saw said to book a private driver - we did that from Naples to Positano and it was 100% worth it.”
A different individual wrote, “We took a private car from Naples to Positano! No issues,” while another chimed in, “Took a private car from Naples…it’s worth it.”
It's All Part of the Experience
Some viewers failed to perceive the TikToker's experiences as anything out of the ordinary when it comes to traveling. After all, they believe that encountering such challenges is a normal part of the journey, as exemplified by comments like "Sounds like traveling to me" and "Welcome to traveling, it's all about adventures."
‘This has to be a parody account’
Echoing the previous sentiment, additional commenters indirectly suggested that Lexi might not be well-suited for traveling. One sarcastically remarked, “Poor you. You had to walk,” while another exclaimed, “160 STEPS OH MY GOD.”
Another commenter offered advised Lexi to ”Stay at home, safe and comfy,” to avoid similar experiences in the future.
‘Welcome to Europe dear Americans’
Lexi's video also sparked a buzz on Twitter, where some individuals criticized the American tourist for their lack of knowledge about what Europe is like. One sarcastic comment stood out, saying, “Welcome to Europe dear Americans.”
'Go home'
“Go home,” another Twitter user wrote, adding, “the fact that you expect a secluded location in a small country made of mountains and workfields to have superstreets for ur comfort is such an american take it makes me violent.”
