World's Oldest Mom Struggled to Keep Up With Twins She Gave Birth at 70

It’s never too late to become a mom and have beautiful children — Omkari Singh proved this to be true when she gave birth to twins at 70, officially becoming the world’s oldest mother in 2008.

Although the mother from Northern India was already blessed with 2 daughters and 5 grandsons, she, as well as her husband, didn’t want to give up on having a son to inherit their small holdings.

The determined couple had to make sacrifices to bring their son into the world using the expensive IVF treatment. Omkari’s husband, who is now a retired farmer, mortgaged his land, sold his buffalos, and spent his life savings to pay 350,000 INR for the IVF treatment.

Finally, the couple's effort paid off, and Omkari has gotten pregnant at 70, “I was shocked when the old lady told me she was pregnant,” said gynecologist Nisha Malik.

But as expected, Omkari’s labor was far from easy, “By the time she was brought to me, she was bleeding heavily in a lot of pain, and barely conscious.” Her gynecologist said. “We had to order blood to start an operation, but thankfully, the woman and her children survived.”

The 70-year-old woman could make it through her 8-month pregnancy and difficult delivery. But the twins were born premature and weighed two pounds each, and Omkari’s twin daughter passed away at the age of 4 due to a wrong prescription.

The couple is still feeling blessed and fortunate to have a son at this late age, “At last we had a son and heir,” Omkari’s husband said.

Omkari felt like other mothers when she gave birth to her son Akashvani. She said to the Indian Times: "I thought if I will give birth to a boy, I will become like other mothers. Without a son, there was no life for me. Because, who would own this house if I had no sons?"

But getting pregnant at such an age comes at a cost — the couple admitted that their old age is giving them a hard time coping with their young, energetic son.

“I’m not able to bathe him properly. I have problems getting him dressed. It’s hard to run around and feed him.” The mother said.

Now, Omkari’s wish in life is to live long enough to see her only son getting married, “I hope my son gets married very quickly.”
