Dorothea’s story recently left Phoenix residents stunned.
The 10-year-old Chihuahua mix was found stranded on a shopping cart in a treacherous canal, utterly exhausted and barely holding on.
Terrified and with no way to escape, she clung desperately to the cart, hoping for a miracle.
Thankfully, the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society Field Team sprang into action and responded to the call without hesitation!
How Did She Get There
A passerby grew concerned when they noticed a mysterious "object" floating in the middle of the canal. But as they looked closer, they realized it was breathing—and it wasn’t an object at all.
It was a dog, inexplicably stranded on a shopping cart, with no one around to help her.
Dorothea, a senior Chihuahua mix, immediately caught the passerby’s attention. They quickly called for help, leaving the rescue to the experts. Before long, teams from the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Fire Department arrived at the scene.
Hunter Stribling, a medical technician from the shelter, worked closely with the fire department to rescue Dorothea as quickly as possible. With her unknown circumstances and fragile state, both teams understood that every second counted.
Using a ladder, they carefully approached the terrified dog, who appeared frozen with fear.
Fortunately, the rescue mission had a successful outcome when Dorothea's paws finally made contact with the ground. Stribling and his teammates were overjoyed!
“Miracles do happen! 🥹🙏We are beyond grateful for the quick actions of our incredible Field Team and the Phoenix Fire Department who worked together to give this sweet pup a second chance at life,” Arizona Humane Society stated in an Instagram video.
Dorothea's rescue story quickly garnered national attention, highlighting the incredible efforts of AHS in aiding stray dogs. Fortunately, Dorothea was one of those fortunate dogs in need of help.
Adorable Twist
The senior pup was immediately taken to the hospital for a full examination.
Aside from dehydration, ticks, and the lingering smell of canal water, Dorothea was found to have a couple of fractured teeth but was otherwise in surprisingly good health.
Soon after, she joined her new companions at the Arizona Humane Society facility, settling into a safe and caring environment. Despite her age, it only took a few days for this sweet dog to charm everyone with her adorable personality and lively spirit!
After receiving her treatment, Dorothea’s loving nature quickly shone through, melting the hearts of her rescuers.
“Throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS’ groomer), Dorothea proved to be a sweet, affectionate girl who loved cuddles and attention from humans,” AHS shared in a post on their website.
Just days later, an exciting update brought even more joy to her rescuers.
Adopters had reached out to the shelter, eager to give Dorothea the loving home she deserved! With her adorable personality and natural ability to be a wonderful companion, the AHS team couldn’t have been happier to see her find the perfect family.
From now on, Dorothea will get to enjoy rolling in the grass, taking plenty of walkies, and embarking on countless adventures with her new family by her side.
At last, she can spend her golden years surrounded by love and care, far removed from the dangers of her past ordeal.
