Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to a creepy voice in your bedroom but not knowing where it's coming from. Only to realize that it's coming from a camera system that you set up and that someone could be watching you.
This is the exact experience of the Lemay family's 8-year-old daughter in Memphis, Tennessee. The family installed a RING camera to keep watch over their daughter while they were away, not realizing that a stranger may have been watching her in her room the whole time.
The entire incident was caught on camera and featured in a YouTube video titled "5 Freaky Videos Recorded by RING Cameras." The video shows Alyssa entering her bedroom and soon realizing that someone is watching her because the blue light from the RING camera is blinking.
Then in a strange man’s voice, she heard this:
“Hello there.”
Gasping, the little girl tried to figure out where the voice was coming from. She checked her toys to see if they were the source of the noises.
She quickly looked around the room, and the man soon started repeatedly screaming a racial slur at her. Alyssa responded by yelling, "What? I can't hear you, I can't hear you."
The man kept telling her to go tell her mom the racial slur and demanded that she repeats it back to him. Moments later, the voice replied to Alyssa, asking "Who are you?" and said to be her best friend and Santa Claus.
“I’m your best friend. I’m Santa Clause,” the man said.
The 8-year-old was filled with fear as she yelled "Mommy!" in an attempt to be rescued from the terrifying situation.
“I’m Santa Clause. Don’t you wanna be my best friend? I’m Santa Clause,” the voice attempted to comfort the girl.
After all this, the man told her to do whatever she wants, like breaking things in her room. “I’m your best friend. You can do whatever you want right now. You can mess up your room, you can break your TV, you can do whatever you want,” he said.

The scariest part about this is that it took only a few days for the camera to be hacked and that no one knows for how long the hacker had access to the device. It could have gone on for an extended period if the hacker hadn't made any sounds through the camera.
The incident with the Lemay family's daughter brings to light the potential dangers of RING cameras and prompts the question of whether these devices, meant to protect our children and give us peace of mind, are actually serving their intended purpose or if they are just providing a means for hackers to watch and even talk to our children without us knowing.
As a parent, you can take proactive steps to protect your kids while you're away. This may include regularly checking and monitoring the activity on your RING camera, educating your children on the potential dangers of these cameras, and teaching them how to recognize and respond to suspicious activity or interactions."
