One recent case on Reddit has sparked an online debate among users, where a man shares his story about his ex-wife wanting a share of the money from the sale of their former marital home, with the first refusing to do so.
Five Years of Marriage and a Shared Home

Sharing his story on Reddit, a 38-year-old husband revealed that he and his ex-wife, who is 32, were married for five years and bought a house after their first year of marriage.

Throughout their four years of marriage, the couple had a plan and now two-year-old son.

After five years of marriage, the wife requested a divorce and expressed her desire to return to her home country with a clean financial slate, free of debt.
Consequently, the husband took ownership of the house, car, medical bills, and credit card debt.

After a careful review of the husband's legal case and all the relevant conditions, the Reddit community agreed that he did nothing wrong in refusing to give his ex-wife any money from the sale of the house. They asserted that he had every right to withhold the money.

“Well, she can have a share of the house sale if she also pays for the medical bills, the credit card debt, car payments, and of course a monthly child support payment for your son,” a Redditor who voted “NTA” wrote.
“OMG, I can't believe the woman just left everything INCLUDING her son!!! And then dares to ask for money from the house sale!?!?”

“Some women don’t like being mothers and the societal pressure to be the perfect mummy and sacrifice everything for your child is very real,” one commenter expressed.
Another chimed in with the response: “I think at this point she has lost all rights to call OPs son her child. She abandoned him. Makes her a deadbeat mum. Can't think of a word that begins with ‘M’ to put with mother but you get the idea.”
The Irony of Ex-Wife's Request

Another Redditor argued that the ex-wife had wanted a fresh start with no debts, yet was now complaining about not benefiting from debts she had abandoned. The user pointed out that if she had not left the country, she would have been responsible for child support payments.
Furthermore, any "portion" of the house she may have claimed would have gone toward covering the abandoned child support debt.
Keeping What Is Due

Someone else chimed in with the opinion that the husband was not at fault, arguing that the terms of the divorce were agreed upon at the time, and the wife cannot change them now.
They also suggest that the wife's “freedom from debt was her earnings from the house,” which the husband was entitled to keep.
The Moral Aspect

Another commenter agreed with the previous one that the husband is “NTA”, but also raises a point about checking the legal aspects of the situation.
They argue that since the husband took over the debts and is the sole parent caring for the child, he is “morally” justified in keeping the money from the house sale.
Considering House Sale as Child Support

One individual suggested that the husband should consider the money from the house sale as his ex-wife's child support payments that she owes him for abandoning her responsibilities.
They argue that the husband has taken on all the responsibilities alone, including being the sole caretaker of their child, while the ex-wife “walked away with no responsibility.”

A different commenter pointed out that in the US, during a divorce, all assets, liabilities, and responsibilities are typically divided and addressed in court proceedings, resulting in a divorce decree that outlines each party's rights and obligations.
If the house was solely in the husband's name after the divorce, they argue that he owes his ex-wife nothing from the sale of the house.
Squeezing Blood from a Stone

In an update, the OP clarifies that he is not receiving child support because he “can't squeeze blood from a stone.”
He goes on to explain that in his state, a calculator is used to determine child support based on the incomes of both parents, and he would be entitled to some from his ex-wife given that he has full custody.
