Husband refuses to tidy up before his pregnant wife's friend visit and gets into a "massive fight" with her

One husband recently turned to the internet for guidance after a disagreement with his heavily pregnant wife over tidying up.

He claims he had already done a significant amount of cleaning but wanted his wife to take care of some of the remaining tasks, leading to a heated argument and an online debate about gender roles, pregnancy, and the household.

It's no secret that pregnancy is a difficult journey - creating life can be both physically and emotionally challenging for the expectant mother. 

As a result, it's not uncommon for pregnant women to struggle with household chores and childcare, and most husbands understand this and try to provide support during their wife's nine-month journey.

Expectant Father's Dilemma

As the due date for their baby draws closer, one husband found himself struggling to handle his 7.5-month pregnant wife's lack of participation in household chores. According to his claims, he was doing a lot of work while she sat chatting on the couch.

In a Reddit post, a 30-year-old husband shares that his 33-year-old wife, who is “very pregnant,” is having her friend visit them today.

Prepping for the day ahead, he spent last night scrubbing the kitchen from top to bottom and vacuuming the downstairs, while his wife kicked back and watched TV.

This morning, the husband woke up early and took his son downstairs, fed him breakfast, washed the dishes, and mopped the downstairs.

Half an hour later, the wife joined them downstairs, with her taking on the responsibility of watching their son while the husband prepared to go to the dump.

Chatting over Chores

As the husband worked hard to get things done, his wife took the opportunity to FaceTime with her mom. And even after he returned from his trip to the dump and getting gas, she was still on the couch chatting with her mom via video chat.

As the husband ate his breakfast and fed his son once again, his wife asked him if he planned to tidy up. 

He replied with a simple "no," suggesting that she should take care of it because he felt like he had already done more than he should, considering that she had spent the previous night and this morning chatting to her mom while he worked hard.

Pregnant But Can Handle Regular Tasks

According to the husband's note, his wife is currently 7.5 months pregnant but still able to handle most of her regular tasks despite dealing with the physical and emotional effects of pregnancy.

He understands the difficulty of creating life and respects his wife for being heavily pregnant, but he was only asking her to do a small portion of the prep work she wanted done before her friend arrived.

The wife became very upset and told her husband that tidying up was his responsibility, as the items that needed to be organized were mostly DIY and cleaning supplies, which typically fell under his domain.

Massive Fight

The disagreement between the husband and his pregnant wife  eventually escalated into a “massive fight.” 

As a result, the husband turned to the online community for advice on whether he was at fault for not wanting to tidy up or if he could have handled the situation differently.

Blaming the Husband

The Reddit community provided a variety of viewpoints on the matter, but the consensus was that the husband was at fault and was declared "YTA" (You're the A..hole).

“It IS your stuff after all. The other stuff you did was called being an adult and parent,” the top comment reads. 

It’s Basic Parenting

One commenter used sarcasm to call out the husband, suggesting that he was seeking “kudos for literally just being a parent.” 

They continued, “She’s heavily pregnant, she must be exhausted. You may think it isn’t fair, but unfortunately, you’ll never get to carry your kid for 9 months and find out if it is.” 

Physical Toll of Pregnancy

Another commenter pointed out that men “will never truly understand” the exhaustion that comes with pregnancy and breastfeeding, directing a clear message to the OP: 

“As long as she is pregnant or breastfeeding, the majority of the physical labor falls on you and that is the price you pay to support your partner during this time, regardless of who made the mess and whose friend it is coming over. YTA.”

Husband Didn’t Even Finish His Job

A commenter pointed out that the husband didn’t put away his cleaning supplies or DIY items after cleaning, meaning that he did not fully finish the job. They also sarcastically asked: “Want a gold star for filling the tank? YTA."

Own Your Mess

Offering a different perspective, someone praised the husband for helping with household chores while his wife is heavily pregnant, but it was his mess after all. 

They wrote, “I think it’s great that you’re taking in some of the household chores and helping. It’s hard to do chores when heavily pregnant. Cheers to you on that. But I mean.. if it’s your mess then you should clean it up. ”

One woman shared an anecdote about her husband reading Pregnancy for Men book during her pregnancy. The book's best piece of advice, in his opinion, was “Your wife is literally creating life, what have you done today? Just make the dam. bed.”
