A bride was taken aback when she spotted a young server at her wedding whose makeup and outfit were so "distracting" that she had to kick her out of the wedding because she was “over-shining” her on her special day.
Dream Wedding
In a controversial Reddit post, a 25-year-old wife shares that she and her 30-year-old husband got married not long ago. They planned every detail of their dream wedding, including their preferred catering company.
Unexpected Surprise at Cocktail Hour
After a beautiful wedding ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests headed to the cocktail hour. However, the wife's excitement quickly turned to shock when she spotted someone wearing a bright dress.
Breaking the Wedding Dress Code
The wife had requested all her guests to wear dark colors and minimal makeup so she and her husband could stand out, but apparently, one of the staff members didn’t adhere to her dress code request.
The bride couldn't help but notice the server, a young woman who appeared to be around 19 years old, whose appearance didn't quite meet her standards.
“Too Tight” Pants And “Too Much” Eyeliner
“The server had on clearly too much eyeliner. she also had diamond studs in her ears a flashy ring, and one of those ugly nose studs,” the wife describes.
“The staff's uniform was a black long-sleeved shirt but on her, it was too low cut and her pants were far too tight.”
“It Was Super Distracting”
"The server walking around serving drinks and talking to the guests was so “distracting” that the bride had to take action. She asked another staff member to tell their boss and pointed out the server.
The then boss apologized and asked the server to leave the room and get back to the kitchen.
Bride Threatens to Call the Cops
After a few hours had passed, the bride spotted the server again, this time behind the bar. She called the boss out again and threatened to call the cops if the server didn't leave.
After some hesitation, the boss eventually gave in and asked the server to go home.
Clash of Opinions Among Family Members
The OP's husband and mother-in-law accused her of “acting crazy” and getting a “poor college kid” fired for no reason.
On the other hand, her mother and maid of honor sided with her, saying that it was her wedding day, and she had the right to set her own rules and do as she pleased.
Justifying Her Actions
“It's my wedding and I don't want someone over-shining me and the server should know she's at work and not dress up so much,” the wife maintains.
Bride's Conflicting Emotions
Although she feels entitled to make the rules on her wedding day, the wife also admits to feeling “kind of bad” for the young server.
In search of answers, the wife reaches out to the online community to ask for feedback on whether she was wrong to kick out the server from her wedding.
Was Her Treatment of the Young Server Justified?
The wife's behavior towards the server was harshly criticized by the Reddit community, with most people labeling her as “YTA.”
Despite her belief that it was her wedding and her rules, people criticized her for being “insecure” and too focused on the server's appearance and not enjoying her special day with her husband. Some even suggested that the wife should “seek professional mental health help” to address her insecurities and judgmental behavior towards others.
Bride Would’ve Stood Out Anyway
“YTA but don't worry. I'm sure the catering team will get it right at your next wedding,” wrote one Reddit user, to which someone replied, “Bold to assume she’ll manage another wedding.”
“OP I get having rules for guests and all but having people specifically dressed in dark colors and minimal makeup ‘so my husband and I stood out’, yo who’s wedding is everyone at? What are we celebrating again? I promise regardless you’d have stood out a bit.. walking down the aisle and all.”
Choosing Not To Enjoy the Wedding
“Too bad you didn't get to enjoy your wedding reception because you couldn't stop obsessing over a college-aged server,” another “YTA” voter expressed.
“The things that you objected to in the server could have been fixed - she could have removed her jewelry, and the boss could have given her a shirt that covered her better. But you didn't want it fixed, you chose to complain about her and not the offending items. This was entirely your choice to not enjoy yourself.”
“You Should Unpack All This With A Therapist”
One commenter pointed out that “My wedding, my rules” is only applicable to things like the type of cake or decorations the bride wants, but it doesn’t apply to “terrorizing” a whole catering company and young employees.
“The only thing that outshined you was your insecurity,” they added. “You were so obsessed with how a complete stranger doing her job looked that you threatened to call the police to have her removed from her job.
“Jealous & Judgemental”
“You ruined your own night by being jealous/judgemental of someone who likely had zero intention of drawing any attention to herself,” one commenter argued.
“I can't tell if you were bitter because you felt she was pretty, or because it sounds like she had a more ‘alternative’ look with the way you pointed out that she had.
And instantly decided you didn't like her based on her choice in facial piercings....or both.”
“Extremely Low Self-Esteem”
“YTA for several reasons. The biggest reason is it's your wedding day and instead of focusing on your new husband, on one of the most memorable days of your life, celebrating your love with your family and friends, you're focused on a server and ensuring her life is hell on your wedding day. Do you hear yourself?” commented one user.
The commenter also argued that the young server was simply doing her job and wearing what she was “supposed to be wearing,” and it wasn’t her problem that her attire was too distracting for the bride.
