A woman on TikTok says while appearing tearful that she was fired from her new job after showing up to work just two minutes late.
There are many mistakes an employee can make that their boss may consider firing them for, but things do happen at work, and being late is one of the most common. Usually, a boss won't dismiss an employee for being late if it's beyond their control, but it's expected to be fired if one consistently arrives late to work.
However, it's unimaginable for a boss to fire someone who is only a couple of minutes late, especially when it's the first time they've been late.
This was the case for a woman on TikTok, @merzog1992, who was suddenly let go from her new job after arriving two minutes late.
In the now-viral video, the woman says that she started her new job in the suburbs, just a short 20-minute drive from home, on a Wednesday. She was fired despite liking the job just two days later on Friday.
According to the TikToker, she's always been known for arriving on time, saying that she's "normally really punctual". She even took extra care to be on time when she started her new job, determined to show that she was a “good employee.”
However, she experienced a setback on Friday when she realized she had left her phone at home and had to go back to get it.
The TikToker recalls in the video that when she arrived two minutes late, her boss told her, "You can't be late in your first week. You're fired."
She initially thought it was a joke and responded with, "you're joking," as she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
She added that her workplace was “super chill” and “relaxed”, and that her boss “would f..ck around with people,” which is why she thought it was a joke.
But her boss meant exactly what they said.
"So I got there—again, just to reiterate—at 8:32, and they fired me," she says.
The TikToker expressed her feelings, stating she's "angry," "shocked," and "hurt" about the situation. “Especially just because that's not who I am," she explains.
She also pointed out that no one at the company informed her that showing up late would lead to losing her job.
The woman closes the video by saying, "If anyone has any words of encouragement, I'm really struggling right now."
@merzog1992 is this a fucking joke

Many viewers took to the comment section to voice their opinion about the abrupt firing of the new employee, pointing out that this work environment is “toxic.”
Most of the comments the video received were meant to comfort the woman and remind her that being fired for showing up to work two minutes late is not a common practice in the workplace and that it's likely just an “excuse” to let her go.
“They were looking for am excuse to fire you unfortunately. it's sounds like you dodged a bullet to me,” one wrote.
“They probably didn't have any intention of keeping you or anyone else they've hired,” another added.
“if that’s how they treated you right away, it’s an indication of management not understanding humans and you don’t want to work for them anyway,” a third noted.
Some people said that her termination might actually be a good thing as the work environment was already “toxic.”
"Sounds like a real toxic place to work at. Consider it a blessing. You’ll find something way better," one commented.
“Take it as a sign. I worked 16 years in a toxic place like this. Your better than them,” another added.
Others wrote that their own jobs have a “grace period” for clocking in and that the woman's job should have had one as well. “You deserve better. My job has a 10minute grace period after your shift starts," they commented.
“This comment section is crazy! Usually there is a 10-15 minute grace period,” another user shared.
One viewer tried to cheer her up, sharing that they are often an hour late for work: “2 mins? Damn. I’m an hour late all the time..”
Another commenter pointed out that new hires tend to be late more often: "In all honesty, I’m more likely to be late the first week than ever. It takes a bit to figure out best routes and leave times.”
Ultimately, being punctual at work is essential if you want to keep your job, but terminating someone for being late for just two minutes for the first time raises the question of whether the boss truly wants to keep their employee.
