"You Don't See Restaurant Employees as People": Workers Mock the Daily Struggle With Customers Who Walk in and Order Without a Word of Greeting

When placing your food order, you may opt to have a quick chat with the employees behind the counter, or you may simply prefer to get straight to the point.

This is a topic that often divides people, as was shown in a recent video that showcased a customer who placed their order without a word to the worker, causing the worker to feel disrespected.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to forget important things and the basics of good manners, like greeting a restaurant worker.

This was the case for a customer in the short skit posted by TikToker Cesar Andalon (@bebe_quiche), where the customer didn't take the time to ask the worker how they were doing, instead immediately placing their order.

In the 7-second video, which has received over 120,000 views and features the caption "POV: You Don't See Restaurant Employees as People," Cesar sheds light on the daily struggles of restaurant workers with customers who immediately place an order without a word of greeting.

The worker welcomes the customer with a friendly, "Hi there!" The customer, however, ignores the worker's greeting and starts placing their order without a "hi," "please," or even a "thank you."

The worker replies with a sarcastic, "Oooohkay, I'm doing well. Thank you for asking."

As seen in the video, Cesar views it as disrespectful when customers start placing their orders without talking to employees. However, the comments section revealed varying perspectives on this issue.

The short video sparked a discussion in the comments section, with different opinions on the topic of whether you should make small talk with food service workers or just order right away, making it clear that this is a controversial topic.

Some opposed Cesar's view that customers should chat with the worker before ordering, arguing that it's more efficient and convenient to just order quickly.

“I hate being asked how I’m doing. Just order. Cuz most likely I’m not doin okay,” one wrote. To which Cesar replied: “That sounds like a you problem girlie.”

A second commented, "No I love people who get to the point and I hate when people try to make conversation with me."

A third added, “no thanks, i love her approach. i want customers in and out as quick as possible.”

On the other hand, some viewers backed Cesar, supporting the idea that customers should greet restaurant workers first. “I used to just continue to repeat hi how are you until they said it back,” one user wrote.

“Literally………. But I guess I forget we live in a diverse hot pot so some people weren’t raised w the whole greeting thing,” another agreed.

One person had a different perspective, viewing the situation as just a clash between introverted and extroverted personalities rather than a lack of respect. "More like pov: an introvert meets a lonely extrovert," they shared.

At the end of the day, the debate over whether it's polite to engage in a brief chat with the worker or simply go straight to the point when ordering your food will continue to be a source of disagreement.

The OP was trying to convey the message that some employees need a small chat or a simple "hello" to feel valued, as opposed to the humorously depicted scenario of: "How are you?" "Diet Coke." "That's not what I asked."

However, the real challenge lies not in finding a one-size-fits-all solution for how to interact with food service workers, but rather in the diverse views on what constitutes polite behavior.
