A widow has asked the internet if she is in the wrong for pulling out from attending her sister’s wedding after her sister tried to play matchmaker.
Woman’s Husband Died Five Years Ago
The widow posted the story to the AITA subreddit. She starts the story off by explaining that she lost her husband and the father of her three children just five years ago at the time of the posting.
The OP (Original Poster) elaborates that they had been together since they were 17 and got married in their 20s before her husband passed at the age of 31. She mentions that their children were very young at the time of his passing.
The OP explains that she has missed him a lot in the past five years and has decided to move her focus to her children, hobbies, and career as a way to deal with the grief.
The widow then mentions that she has no interest in dating or finding a new partner.
Family Tries To Force Her To Find New Partner
However, her family, and particularly her sister, are less accepting of this fact.
“My sister and a couple of other family members have been trying to push... I mean encourage me to find a new partner, to find a dad for my kids, to look for more love,” the post continues.
The OP explains that she has had the same conversation with her sister multiple times already. That she simply has no interest in dating. She mentions that she has been this way since she was a teen, but her husband was the exception.
“I loved him, I was best friends with him, we were compatible in every way and we found a relationship that worked for the two of us and gave us a life better than we had planned on,” The OP writes.
The woman explains that she has pleaded with her sister to understand that she is happy with her life and that she isn’t “some broken-hearted shell”.
For a moment, it seemed as though her sister was okay with this answer and left the situation alone.
Sister Invites Single Men To Her Wedding. Tries To Play Matchmaker For Her Unsuspecting Sister
However, The OP continues that her sister has recently announced her engagement and sent invites for her wedding meant to take place in December of 2022.
Her sister and her fiance left a note explaining to the OP that they would cover the costs of the hotel for her because they understood that as a single mom with three kids, she may need extra assistance.
The woman RSVPs “yes” to the wedding.
But just as soon as everything seemed to be going well, the OP’s brother mentions that the only reason their sister decided to cover the cost was that she intended to play matchmaker.
The brother reveals that their sister invited many single men to the wedding and even got a few friends in on the elaborate scheme in order to set OP up with the “perfect man”.
The OP explains that she was furious and called her sister to let her know that she would not be attending the wedding.
The OP’s sister and parents told her she was overreacting. Her parents even went as far as to say that she should just attend the wedding anyway, to support her sister during this momentous occasion. But the OP was having none of it.
Even more shocking is the fact that the sister tried to defend her scheme by telling OP that she was “trying to save her from herself”.
