You Cant Afford That Child: Woman Says Only the Rich and Unemployed People With Gucci Bags Have Planned Children

The ever-rising cost of living extends to the cost of raising a child. From the expenses of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care to providing the essential needs of food and healthcare, it can become a financial burden for some people to the extent that they opt not to have children at all.

The high cost of having a child was recently brought to attention by @veronica.skaia in a now-viral TikTok video.

In the video captioned “Imagine trying to explain this to our ancestors a few centuries ago,” Veronica argues that having a child has now become a "luxury," unlike in the past when giving birth was a normal occasion that everyone would celebrate.

She opens the video by stating that it's “crazy” how having babies have turned into a luxury. And goes on to explain that nowadays when someone announces that they're having a child, people don't respond with celebration and excitement like they used to.

Instead, they often ask, “how the f...k are you affording this?”

Veronica bases her opinion on her social circle, sharing that the only people she knows who are having planned babies “are the f...g rich people.”

“Like the rich people that I went to school with and stuff, that like had their parents buy them a house and like are already married, those are the ones who are like yeah we're gonna pop one out.”

She finds it "insidious" that bringing life into this world, which is a part of the normal human experience, has now become a luxury that not everyone can afford.

Veronica notes that a significant number of people having children are unemployed and rich, as she finds it hard to believe that they have jobs that provide enough income to cover the expenses of a child.

“Unfortunately a lot of the other cases of people having kids it's kind of like the people who rock Gucci bags when you know they're unemployed, you're like ‘damn you can't afford that child’.”

Veronica's viewpoint resonated with many viewers, as seen in the comment section.

It was clear that Veronica wasn’t alone in her belief that having a child is a luxury, as evidenced by a commenter who wrote, “I can only afford a 1bed/1bath apartment on a 6 figure salary lol. How am I gonna buy a house? AND have a kid?”

“Daycare alone is a second mortgage for us,” a second added.

“I just know the people who would potentially be the best parents are almost always the ones that can't/won't have kids it's so sad,” a third shared.

“My thought it always like.....’ooof, in this economy?’” a fourth wrote.

“Plants are the new pets. Pets are the new kids. Kids are the new “we have tigers in an enclosure out back,” a fifth joked.

A different opinion was presented by a commenter who argued that people of lower incomes actually have more children. They wrote, “Rich people have 1-2 kids but lower class have more.”

Another agreed and pointed out that despite the high cost of raising a baby, some people are still having unplanned children. “All i can think about is how are they going to afford them in this economy,” they wrote.

Ultimately, the cost of raising a child can vary widely depending on factors such as location, income level, and parents' lifestyle. But as highlighted by Veronica and agreed upon by many viewers, it's undeniable that it's now harder than ever before to afford the joy of bringing a baby into this world.
