It is often said that money doesn't grow on trees, and for most people, obtaining and earning it requires hard work—a natural and challenging aspect of life. However, life sometimes smiles upon you and blesses you with something you didn't even lift a finger to earn. In the case of one lucky woman, she unexpectedly received a remarkable sum of $50,000!
Bank Error Made One Woman $50,000 Richer

Many people like to indulge in daydreams about how their lives would change if they were to suddenly come into a significant amount of money. Yet, not many will be lucky enough to experience such a serendipitous turn of events.
Just recently, one woman found herself in this fortunate position when the bank mistakenly wired her $50,000, and astonishingly, she was allowed to keep it all for herself.
Unexpected Riches

TikToker Aprille (@epicaprille) shared her surprise over receiving a substantial amount of money from her credit union via an accidental wire transfer. This turn of events allowed her to not only purchase a car and multiple houses, all before the days of online banking.
No Penalties, Just Prosperity

Aprille states that in her 20s, her previous credit union accidentally transferred $50,000 to her, and remarkably, she didn’t face any penalties for the mistake made by the bank. Back then, the woman got a paper slip in the mail that confirmed the wire transfer from her credit union.
“Oh, My God”

At first, Aprille found it hard to believe that what was happening was real, considering that it all seemed too good to be true. "I stood there and I was frozen and I was like, 'Oh, my God, somebody is trying to set me up,'" she recounts.
"I start running through my mind, like everyone who could possibly be like sending me this money."
Astonishing Confirmation from the Bank

When she reached out to the bank, Aprille was surprisingly assured there was no mistake regarding the wire transfer.
Lawyer's Advice on the Accidental Wire Transfer

She then sought advice from a lawyer who told her to report the wire transfer to her bank once again, document everything, and don’t use any of the funds for a period of 30 days.
"If They Don't Claim It, It's Yours"

"He told me to post it somewhere public, so I don't know if it was like a newspaper or something to that effect," Aprille shares. "He said, 'If they don't claim it, it's yours.' And that's exactly what happened, the bank refused to admit that they made a mistake."
Battle to Keep the Funds

Through a series of follow-up videos, Aprille revealed that the bank eventually requested the return of the money. But she didn’t have to comply as the bank didn’t have any valid "grounds" for reclaiming the funds.
Surprisingly, the bank failed to adhere to its own policies regarding the investigation of the mistake and the retrieval of the funds.

The video has quickly become one of the most-viewed on her page, with several viewers even sharing their own stories of mistakenly receiving smaller amounts of money from their bank.
"Happened to me," one user shared. "I was transferred 16k. We got to keep 13k. It was way later the bank noticed. We also tried to report it. They took back the little bit that was left."

Viewers' stories kept pouring in, offering a glimmer of hope that such errors might just happen from time to time, with another person commenting, "They randomly sent me $1500 I thought it was tax return. Used some & then when they realized they made a mistake my account was negative what I spent.”
$80 to $1,080

Someone else shared, "I was living paycheck to paycheck a couple years ago and I was depositing like an 80 dollar check my sister wrote me for watching her kids and the bank accidentally put in 1,080 dollars. I was so excited. I obviously didn’t touch it and they caught their mistake by the end of the day."
Timing Is Everything

A MarketWatch report highlights a case where an 18-year-old received a 10-year probation sentence in 2015 for spending $31,000 that was transferred to his account by mistake due to a shared name with the intended recipient, and he was also required to make restitution.
So, it seems that if this had happened more recently, Aprille might not have been able to keep the money for herself.

In the end, and even though the chances of experiencing the same stroke of luck as this woman and unexpectedly receiving $50,000 by mistake are slim, you can still ask yourself some hypothetical questions. If you were to have the same money, what would you do with the money?
