Delta's seatbelts have recently come under fire for what appears to be a bias against plus-size travelers, providing seatbelts that only cater to slimmer figures.

Traveling alone can be a real headache, especially for those who are always on the go. If you're a seasoned frequent flyer, you've likely experienced your fair share of unfortunate incidents, regardless of the airline or the phase of your journey.

Now, picture this: you're a proud plus-size model exploring the world, and suddenly, you find yourself facing an unnecessary issue caused by Delta Airlines. What's the culprit? It's none other than their seatbelt lengths, which were simply not designed to accommodate her size.

Curve Model Sparks Online Outrage

Remi Bader, TikToker and self-proclaimed "Curve Model", recently expressed her frustration with the well-known airline Delta regarding their seat belts, which appeared to discriminate against plus-size travelers.

In a TikTok video that has since gone viral, featuring a text overlay that reads "Delta. Figure it out!", Bader showed her viewers how the seat belt didn't fit around her waist. As a result, the plus-size model had to request a seatbelt extender during the flight.

Demanding Comfortable Travel for All Sizes

In the video's caption, she wrote, "And no I shouldn't need to ask for an extender. It should just be easy!" Bader also tagged Delta to bring the issue to their attention, but the airline has not yet issued an official response.

Supportive Stories from Air Travelers

The model received an outpouring of support, with countless individuals sharing their own stories of struggling to fasten seatbelts around their waists during air travel. One commenter expressed, “Eeek. everyone praised delta too. Being a size 14 should not warrant an extension.”

Another shared, “I was asked to move from the exit row once because I needed an extender. Apparently, an extender means you’re unable to open the exit door.“

Breaking the Silence

Several others expressed the embarrassment they felt when having to ask for a seatbelt extender. One commenter even shared a personal experience of quietly pretending their seatbelt was secured to avoid embarrassment.

The video also sparked a wave of suggestions to address this uncomfortable issue. One suggestion put forward was the idea of packaging seatbelt extensions under the seats by default, making them readily accessible to passengers who may need them while avoiding the potential discomfort of having to ask for an extender.

Suggesting Weight Loss as the Solution

Among the opinions voiced, a few commenters argued that Delta shouldn't bear the burden of providing accommodations for plus-size passengers. Instead, they suggested that plus-size travelers should only focus on losing weight to avoid using seatbelt extenders.

The model revealed that she has flown with the airline on multiple occasions, and she has consistently experienced this issue every time, without any exceptions.

The reported average size of an American woman has historically been a size 14, leading to some adjustments in the clothing industry. However, the reality remains that some brands have yet to adequately address the diversity in body sizes, including the airline industry, as evident from Remi's experience.

"Plus-Size Travel Struggles" Series

Remi's challenges as a plus-size person are not uncommon, as demonstrated by Jaelynn Chaney (@jaebaeofficial), a content creator who gained recognition through her series titled "Plus-Size Travel Struggles," shedding light on the struggles faced by individuals of larger sizes while traveling.

Speaking to BuzzFeed, Jaelynn said, "I decided to start documenting and sharing the struggles that plus-size people face when traveling because a lot of plus-size people can relate to these struggles, yet they are rarely talked about, especially by someone my size." 

Going Viral: Jae's Series Strikes a Chord

Jae's TikTok series, "Plus-Size Travel Struggles," garnered widespread attention with millions of views, as she compiled a list of things that are disliked by plus-size travelers.

In her series of videos, the TikToker shares her frustrations regarding several aspects of flying. "These are some of the struggles that plus-size travelers face. Travel is possible for everyBODY, but it definitely comes with challenges and should be more accessible," she captioned one of the videos.

Top Air Travel Anxieties

Jae discusses multiple challenges she faces during air travel, such as the anxiety of asking for a seatbelt extender, the tray table being unable to come down, narrow aisles and bulkhead seats, compact airplane bathrooms, restricted room for movement, experiencing extra security measures due to body size, the discomfort of tiny airport chairs with armrests, and concerns about causing damage to the toilet.

In another video, she draws attention to the lack of inclusivity for plus-size individuals within the travel industry, providing some examples like limited-size options at souvenir shops, small towels, and being assigned two twin mattresses instead of a king bed.

Empowering Message to Plus-Size Travelers

Continuing in the third video of the series, Jae shared additional examples of the uncomfortable experiences that plus-size travelers face. She then left an empowering message to her followers: "Despite the challenges, travel is worth it."

Offering her insights on how the travel industry can better accommodate bodies of all sizes, Jaelynn emphasized, "The industry needs to realize that the average woman is no longer a size 14. They are now a size 18 and beyond. Yet as we’ve gotten bigger, things like airplane seats, clothing, and everything else have gotten smaller or stayed the exact same.”

“To see a true change, the industry needs to stop ignoring the needs of plus-size individuals and start expanding to meet our needs and become truly inclusive. People of all colors, sizes, and abilities exist, and we deserve to have access to things that others have had for years."
