"The audacity": Dunkin’ customer says worker asked her to pay for a cop’s cup of coffee in drive-thru

A Dunkin' customer said that a worker tried to make her pay for a police officer's cup of coffee after a mix-up with her order, sparking a wave of online outrage and discussions about the societal expectations surrounding paying for law enforcement officers' coffee and meals, despite some arguing that being a cop is considered "one of the highest paying jobs."

Surprising Request at Dunkin'

Madeline Thornton (@travelin_madeline) created a stitch video recounting her experience at Dunkin', where a worker surprised her by asking to pay for another customer's order in the drive-thru.

The viral video that Thornton stitched showcases a McDonald's customer describing how she was unexpectedly approached by a worker who asked if she would pay for a police officer's order behind her.

When asked to pay for the officer's order totaling $17.42, she declined, resulting in a reaction from the employee who appeared "disgusted." The employee also made a comment about how other customers typically cover the expenses for cop’s meals.

However, it seems that what Thornton experienced at the Dunkin' drive-thru was a result of the worker mistakenly assuming that the officer's order belonged to her.

She Only Ordered Two Dozen Donuts

"I went through the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru to order a couple dozen donuts, and when I got to the window to pay, the lady just kind of mumbled something about my total,” the TikToker recalls. “I handed her my card. When she came back with my card, she had a cup of coffee with her. And I was like, 'Oh I didn't order coffee; I ordered two dozen donuts.'"

Request for a Refund

Thornton continues, "And she just kind of looked at me weird and was like, 'Well, why didn't you say something when I told you your order was $2 and something cents? And I was like, 'Honestly, I didn't hear you. I'm sorry, but can you please refund this charge and then charge me for the actual donuts.'"

Reluctant Worker

In her video, she mentions that the Dunkin' worker appeared hesitant to refund her for the cost of the coffee, pointing out that the drink was intended for a police officer. "She said, 'Well the person who ordered this coffee is a cop.'”

Refusing To Pay

Thornton didn't find being a cop to be a compelling reason for her to pay for his coffee, explaining that she wasn't using her personal credit card. “I was like, 'I can't pay for this coffee still. I'm paying with a company credit card, and I'm only authorized to purchase donuts this morning.'"

Tension Escalates

The Dunkin' worker persisted in asking Thornton to pay for the cop's coffee using her company credit card, resulting in the manager having to step in to resolve the matter. "After some back and forth with her manager and me, I was finally able to get the refund on the coffee,” she recounts. “But it was a close call. Definitely a close call."

Dunkin' Worker Slammed

Thornton's TikTok video went viral on the platform, amassing over 1.1 million views as of July 13. In the comment section, many viewers expressed their support for the creator and criticized the Dunkin' worker for her perceived "audacity."

Cops Can Pay for Their Own Coffee

One viewer found it absurd that the worker expected Thornton to pay for the cop's coffee. They referenced a signing bonus being offered to police officers in their area, stating, "The job posting for police in my town currently offers a $5,000 signing bonus. They can buy their own damn coffee."

Another agreed, “Cop is one of the best paying jobs in town where I live. They can pay for their own coffee.”

Suspicious “Mix-Up”

There were viewers who speculated about the possibility of the "mix-up" being intentional, given that the worker knew the coffee was intended for a cop. One person questioned, "Sounds like she knew the cop had the coffee order but she was trying to make you pay for it AND your doughnuts?"

Denying Cops Service Discount

One seemingly former worker shared their experience of denying police officers a service discount, despite it being available. They admitted, "I used to lie and tell police offers we didn't have a ‘service discount’ of any kind, but I would happily give free coffee to EMTs and firefighters"

Cops Park for Free Coffee?

Another viewer even hinted that some cops intentionally park for extended periods at local coffee shops in order to receive free coffee. They commented, "Is that why I always see cop cars parked at my local Starbucks? Sometimes for hours."

In response, someone wrote, “When I worked at SB, every cop got their drinks for free. every time.”

The Free Coffee Mindset

According to some comments, it appears that there are expectations among some police officers that they should receive free coffee or, at the very least, a discount. “My partner works at a coffee shop and the cops that come through are always shocked that they have to pay for their coffee,” one viewer shared.

Another wrote, “I was a waitress & the restaurant didn’t have any kind of service discount for anyone. Cop came in and tried to pick a fight bc no discount.”
