The former president and likely GOP nominee for the 2024 elections, Donald Trump, was primarily greeted by boos at the South Carolina/Clemson football game. But the appearance also triggered a response from a columnist who blasted Trump and those who invited him as "cowards."
The "stench" of Trump
College professor, author, and columnist Issac Bailey published in South Carolina's "The State," a piece describing the game as "a quasi-religious holiday in the Palmetto State" that now carries the "stench" of Trump's appearance. But, Bailey did not only focus on Trump but included South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, who was with the former president, saying he should be ashamed yet, "you'd have to possess a shred of integrity for shame to be even a possibility, so I get why he isn't."
Many should be "ashamed"
Bailey continued, "Whoever signed off on that pathetic Trump parade should be fired, though I suspect, given how far we've fallen from any sense of decency, they may have already received a raise." The columnist also had plenty to say about The University of South Carolina, claiming they should also be "ashamed," adding it was "run by cowards comfortable bending the knee to an obviously-compromised governor."
Nikki Haley's state
Considering that the state's Governor is Nikki Haley, yet Trump refused to be part of RNC debates, the columnist labeled him as a "coward." He shared, "Haley’s team won the football game, and she won an important political victory against a man who brags about how tough he is but whose decision to fly into Columbia was political weakness. McMaster and others pretended the man they treated like an emperor had new clothes. But those of us with eyes and a functioning brain know the truth, that he was exposed as the naked coward’s bully he’s long been."
Billboards welcomed the ex-president
Several billboards were displayed, saying, "You’re Guilty. Welcome to Columbia, Donald." It adds, "sponsored by League of Radical Leftist Vermin - Jay Bender Instigator.” According to "The State," Bender is "a veteran Columbia attorney who specializes in media law." He commented, "In a normal, rational world, anyone that crazy would not be considered a serious candidate for public office."
Trump's campaign responded
Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, spoke about the billboards, “President Trump continues to dominate in every single poll out of South Carolina. It seems like this disturbed individual is suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, and hopefully, he seeks the professional help he needs.”
