"Boomers Hate Young People So Much" Because of Three Reasons, Woman Says - "These are the people who run our government"

It's a well-known fact that there exists a generational gap between boomers and younger people, manifesting itself in various areas and ways. According to one argument, this difference generates hatred among boomers towards younger generations, mainly due to three essential factors: labor being the boomers’ identity, lack of frame of reference, and heavy metal poisoning.

TikToker @loc_rants recently shared a stitch video in response to another TikToker's question, “Why do boomers hate young people so much?” to share her perspective about the answer to the question.

Productivity = Self Worth

The TikToker puts forth the argument that one of the primary reasons for the "hate" from boomers towards younger people is because their entire identity is extremely dependent on their productivity. “They only see their personal value as being tied to the hard work,” she explains.”

Continuing her argument, she says, “So when you point out that they didn’t have to work as hard to get things as we do, they see that as an attack on who they are as a person because they don’t have any identity outside of how hard they worked.”

No Frame of Reference

According to the original creator, the second factor contributing to boomers' attitude towards younger people is their lack of a frame of reference. “Because when they were kids, you had to like, actively mess up in order to not be basically successful, like, as long as you had a full-time job working somewhere, you would be able to buy a house,” she argues.

Success Means Buying a House

The TikToker asserts that there is a significant gap between how boomers and younger generations measure success, as she explains, “Your [a boomer] measure of success was how nice of a house you had. It was just assumed that you would be able to buy a house.”

No House, Not Working Hard Enough

Due to this gap, the TikToker argues that boomers tend to make assumptions when they see younger individuals without houses. “So, when they see people like us who don’t have houses, they assume that it’s because we’ve made mistakes and we’re just slacking and we’re not trying hard enough.”

Inflation's Impact on Younger Generations

Continuing her explanation, the creator highlights the influence of inflation on the economy and present-day American wages, saying, “Because they [boomers] have no frame of reference for an America where you can work 80 hours a week and still not have enough money to pay rent, like they cannot conceive of that because it just didn’t exist when they were kids.”

In her opinion, a third factor contributing to this gap between different generations is that boomers were exposed to a significant amount of heavy metals, particularly due to leaded gas and the presence of lead in various products. Consequently, the creator suggests that “they’re not really probably very healthy.”

“These are the people who run our government,” she concludes the video.

Stories of Boomers Struggling with Retirement

The video sparked a lively discussion in the comment section about the significant generational disparities, with some viewers sharing their own experiences regarding the matter. One commenter mentioned, “Personally know a handful of boomers who had CRISES when they retired. Full-on existential panic with no work to define them.”

A second shared, “So true. My dad retired with something like 300 unused sick days. And was so proud of that. Nope. Just, no.”

Success vs Inherited Benefits

According to one viewpoint, “boomers had materially better lives than most of their parents” because boomers attributed their success to their own efforts rather than acknowledging the advantages provided by the previous generation.

Another commenter chimed in by adding to the factors mentioned in the video, stating “And remember all their parents & themselves smoked tobacco religiously.” In response, the creator sarcastically replied, "Among other drugs..."

Boomers’ Resistance to Self-Reflection

Another commenter expressed the sentiment that boomers have difficulty understanding younger people, writing, “So true and we force them to look at themselves and reflect and they can’t take it.”

The TikToker agreed with this comment, adding, “Yeah, and it's scary. They haven't been equipped to deal with self reflection - and self reflection is at the core of our generation”.

Frustration with Inflation

Others expressed their frustration in the comment section about the current inflation levels and their impact on their standard of living. “My dad used to argue that his first job after college only paid $6 an hour. After inflation, that’s only $3 less than I make in my late 30’s,” One individual shared.

Generalizing an Entire Generation Is “Silliness”

On the other hand, not all viewers agreed with the creator's generalization of an entire generation and the assumption that boomers hate younger people. Some criticized her perspective, with one viewer stating, "They don't. Stop your silliness."

Another commenter chimed in, saying, "You're just rationalizing your prejudice."
